Designing robots that understand people is only half the equation. Developers also have to consider what features robots will need for people to trust them and want to engage with them. We know people will be applying social-psychological constructs—such as beliefs, emotions and motivations—to try to understand what these robots are doing and why. If this is the way that people are intuitively trying to make sense of robots, we should be trying to design these systems that meet them halfway.
